Shavuot / "Pentecost"
What is Shavuot?
The festival of Shavuot is one of God's appointed times (Moedim). The Torah commands us to celebrate this day as a harvest festival; additionally, the day has become a celebration of the day YHWH gave the Torah to the Jewish people. Shavuot – or “The Feast of Weeks” – is one of the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals, along with Pesach (Passover) and Sukkot. It is celebrated on the 6th of Sivan in Israel, and the 6th and 7th of Sivan in the diaspora. The Bible describes the Shavuot holiday as an agricultural celebration: the festival of Reaping (Jeremiah 5:24, Deuteronomy 16:9–11, Isaiah 9:2).
