Adam and Eve sinned and were expelled from the Garden of Eden and the Cherubim
were placed at the entranceway to prevent them returning. [Genesis 3:24] What
are the Cherubim and why were they set at the entrance to Paradise? This is the
question I asked myself this week.
This is the first time that the Cherubim are mentioned and the last time is when
Heaven is seen in Revelation Chapter Four. My thinking was, are the Cherubim
a picture of our Lord? With a little research I found it was and is and will be at the
end. The statement by Yeshua, “I am the Alpha and the Omega I am the first and
the last”, [Revelation 1:8] really comes home when we look at this “Creature” at the
beginning and then again at the end.
Whenever the Israelites camped around the four sides of the tabernacle they
camped in groups of three, [Numbers Chapter 2] to the East - Judah, Issachar and
Zebulon under the flag of a Lion. Opposite to the West were the tribes of Ephraim,
Manasseh and Benjamin with the flag of a Beast (Ox). South of the Tabernacle were
the Tribes of Rueben, Simeon and Gad under the flag showing the face of a man.
And to the North were the tribes of Dan, Asher and Naphtali who had the flag of an
Eagle.
Each one of these “Faces” represent the four faces of the Cherubim: the Eagle, the
Man, the Ox and the Lion. Each one showing the Four faces of our Lord and Saviour,
Yeshua. Each one of these faces was placed at the entrance to the lost Paradise and
guarded by the “Gospel” of Yeshua. So therefore for us to enter into the Holy place
we have to go through the way of the Gospel who is Yeshua [John 14:6] as He is the
one guarding the narrow gate through which we must enter in. [Matthew 7:13-14]
The Four faces: The Man - the human side of God, the Lion - the power of God, the
Ox – the Servant side of God and the Eagle the strength of God. Each one of these
symbols represents our Lord Yeshua, God on earth. He came to identify with us on
the human level [Hebrews 2:7] to show and explain how we as mortal people should
live. The Lion of Judah - the Beast that turns from nothing, [Proverbs 30:30] whoever
provokes Him to anger sins against their own life. [Proverbs 20:2] The Ox - a Beast
of burden, labours day in and day out for it’s master, it is a servant and is full of
strength [Proverbs 14:4] as was Yeshua [Matthew 11:28-30}. And finally the Eagle - it
flies above the storms as Yeshua takes us above the storms. [Isaiah 40:31]
It is said that Matthew was written for the Jews as he was presenting overwhelming
evidence that Yeshua was the Messiah they had been waiting for. Mark is an
overview of Yeshua in action, his writings are showing a servant in action. The Book
of Luke is written to show the human side of Yeshua. Luke traces Yeshua’s line back
to Adam [Luke 3:21-38] and shows the reality of the Lord’s resurrection in bodily
form. [Luke 24:36-43] He ends with the promise of the Holy Spirit. The Book of
John speaks of how the Father and the Son are one, [John 10:30] Yeshua revealed
exactly who He was when with 7 miracles and 7 statements of “I Am” He spoke of
His divinity.
The early Church Fathers suggested that the Gospels are shown within the
Cherubim. They are also a picture for us and how to relate to people through the
Gospel. Matthew speaks about the human face of God and Luke talks about the
servant and priestly duties and the sacrifice of an “Ox”. Something we are required
to do is to be a living sacrifice, a servant of the Lord. [Romans 12:1] Mark has an
early mention of the winged creature, with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit hovers over
the earth. [Genesis 1:2] The Book of John teaches of Yeshua and His divinely royal
position, as is the Lion, the Lion of Judah.
This indicates to me the Cherubim placed at the gateway to Paradise are more than
just a guard but Yeshua Himself. When the Curtain was torn from top to bottom
we can all enter into the Holly of Holies but we can only go by way of the Gospels
and all that they mean. As Yeshua is the only way [John 14:6] we have a new and
living way to enter into the presence of God. [Hebrews 10:20] That Yeshua and
Yeshua alone holds the Keys to the Kingdom [Revelation 1:18] and the entire Word
of God is leading to this fact. Without the truth of Yeshua in our hearts and without
the confession of who He is from our mouths it is impossible to return to Paradise.
[Romans 10:9] The Gospels are a picture of the Cherubim and a guard that we
should have over our hearts to keep us true to His truth in these end times. [Mark
9:24]
